BA II Plus technique for CFA Level I quantitative methods
Exam-day workflow: TVM sign discipline, NPV/IRR keystrokes, statistics and regression worksheets, ICONV traps and the settings that quietly ruin otherwise perfect answers.
The CFA Level I quantitative methods section is a machine for testing whether you can set up problems faster than you can solve them. The BA II Plus is allowed precisely because it rewards preparation: every TVM, NPV/IRR, statistics and conversion question becomes ten keystrokes of routine — if your settings and signs are disciplined.
Pacing: structure first, compute last
Budget roughly 90 seconds per question. Spend the first 20 writing down which registers you know and which you need — N, I/Y, PV, PMT, FV or the flow list — then compute once. Re-reading the vignette mid-keystroke is how scores die. Every worked number below is engine-verified, so practicing them on FinScope trains exactly the muscle the exam measures.
TVM: the sign discipline
- Before every problem: 2ND CLR TVM — stale registers are the #1 silent killer.
- Decide the direction of money: out of pocket is minus, into pocket is plus.
- Invest 100 for 5 years at 10%: PV = −100, I/Y = 10, N = 5, PMT = 0, CPT FV → 161.051.
- Loan of 100,000 at 1% monthly for 360 months: PV = 100,000, CPT PMT → 1,028.61.
- Check the answer's sign before moving on — an FV or PMT with the wrong sign means a setup error, not a rounding error.
NPV and IRR keystrokes
Enter the CF worksheet: CF0 = −1000, then C01 = 300, F01 = 1, C02 = 500, F01 = 1, C03 = 500, C04 = 200. Then NPV → I = 10 → CPT gives 198.2105, and the IRR menu computes 19.0862%. Two habits: check that F01 (frequency) is 1 unless flows truly repeat, and glance at the sign changes — the flow −1000, 500, −300, 400 has three, which means IRR is not trustworthy on it.
The statistics worksheet for regression
Set the calc mode to LIN (2ND + STAT), enter X data in X01… and Y data in Y01…, then read a, b, r from the 2-var menu. With points (1,2), (2,5), (3,10) the verified outputs are a = −2.3333, b = 4 and r = 0.9897 — and forecasting is instant: Y′ at X = 4 is 13.6667, and X′ at Y = 13.6667 is exactly 4. The forecast keys (X′ and Y′) are the ones candidates most often forget exist.
ICONV and the frequency traps
- 2ND ICONV: NOM is the quoted annual rate, EFF the true annual rate, C/Y the compounding count.
- 12% nominal quarterly → EFF 12.5509%; monthly → 12.6825%. Write the frequency beside every rate you quote.
- For bond questions, C/Y is 2 for semi-annual coupons — setting it to 1 silently re-prices the bond.
- P/Y and C/Y are separate: a monthly-payment loan with quarterly-compounded interest needs both set deliberately.
Gold tips
- Watch the BGN indicator at the top of the screen: on = annuity due, off = ordinary. Reset to END after lease questions.
- 2ND FORMAT sets decimals — use at least 4 for rate problems; 2 decimals can flip a multiple-choice answer.
- Amortization questions live in 2ND AMRT with P1/P2 — read the window labels before reading the numbers.
- Practice on a web calculator like FinScope between sessions: identical engine results, faster feedback loop.
- Bring a backup BA II Plus (or the same model) — the proctor will not lend you one.
Frequently asked questions
Which calculator is allowed in the CFA exam?
CFA Institute permits only two families: the Texas Instruments BA II Plus (including the Professional) and the Hewlett-Packard 12C. Everything in this article — TVM registers, CF worksheet, statistics, ICONV — is available on the base BA II Plus, which is the most common choice among candidates.
How do I avoid BGN and P/Y mistakes under exam pressure?
Build a fixed pre-question ritual: 2ND CLR TVM, confirm END mode (no BGN symbol on screen), confirm P/Y = 1 unless the question says otherwise, then set the registers. The ritual costs five seconds and eliminates the two most common silent errors in quantitative methods.
When should I distrust a computed IRR in the exam?
Whenever the cash-flow stream changes sign more than once — the flow −1000, 500, −300, 400 has three sign changes and can hide multiple IRRs. If the vignette shows interim outflows after the initial investment, prefer NPV or MIRR reasoning and only quote the IRR the answer choices expect.
